TALK: From Primrose to Poppies – Shaker Medicinal Herbs
1843 W Housatonic St
A talk and tour of the village’s medicinal herb garden and related artifacts in the Brick Dwelling. Growing herbs—plants for medicine, cooking, and dyes—was one of the Shakers’ most important industries. Initially gathering herbs from the wild, the Shakers began to cultivate plants as the religious communities expanded. Selling surplus from the garden evolved into a large and profitable business—especially medicinal herbs—for most of the nineteenth century.
