EXHIBITION OPENING – Borrowed Light: Barbara Ernst Prey @ Hancock Shaker Village

Painter Barbara Ernst Prey has an affinity for light; specifically, capturing the fleeting luminosity within built and natural environments. Borrowed Light presents a new body of watercolors depicting scenes from the village. Taking its title from the Shaker principle of “borrowed light,” or the incorporation of windows and skylights into interior walls as a way to refract light from the outside in, Prey’s exhibition is inspired by visits across three seasons where she immersed herself in the buildings, historic artifacts, and landscape of this site. Her voice brings new consideration to the visual and haptic experience of this site, historically and today.

EXHIBITION OPENING – While Mighty Thunders Roll: Popular Artists Sing the Shakers @ Hancock Shaker Village

The Shakers estimated twenty-five thousand songs received to date and approximately ten thousand survive – more than all ballads and spirituals combined.  From American anthems like Simple Gifts to lesser-known hymns, ballads, and laboring songs, music continues to occupy a central role in Shaker life and worship. While Mighty Thunders Roll explores and expands this musical legacy through a display of historic objects and ephemera shown alongside newly commissioned a capella renditions of Shaker songs performed by a selection of popular musicians including Laurie Anderson, Yo-Yo Ma, and Natalie Merchant. Displayed on video and audio installations throughout Hancock Shaker Village, While Mighty Thunders Roll enlivens the history of Shaker music, and illuminates the power of voice as a fundamental expression of spirit.

Shaker Barn Music: The Suitcase Junket @ Hancock Shaker Village
May 26 @ 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Shaker Barn Music: The Suitcase Junket @ Hancock Shaker Village

From the salvaged sounds of American juke joints, back porches, honky tonks, and rock clubs, The Suitcase Junket is a one-man virtuoso, Matt Lorenz, whose signature sound is a mash up of mountain ballads, original rock anthems, blues manifestos, and dance-hall festivity.  It is magnificent, rousing songwriting, played out on instruments built from broken bottles, thrift store forks, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, and more.  Named to Spotify’s Best of Folk & Americana and Blues & Blues Rock playlists (he has combined streams of 1.25 million), he caught the attention of NPR (who chose his album Make Time as one of the year’s favorite sessions).  Make time for this one.
