ATTENTION: Melville Contemporary Call for Art

 

The City of Pittsfield’s Lichtenstein Center for the Arts is hosting a juried group show entitled MELVILLE CONTEMPORARY in conjunction with CALL ME MELVILLE, a summer long celebration of the life and writings of Herman Melville in the Berkshires, where he wrote Moby Dick, Bartleby the Scrivener, The Confidence Man, and many other works. Paintings, mixed media, sculpture and other media encouraged.

Artists are invited to submit up to 5 works for consideration. All work must be related to the life and writings of Herman Melville. Work that references writings other than Moby Dick are especially encouraged in order to provide a fuller picture of his life and work.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, July 30, 2012. Artists will be notified of their acceptance Friday, August 3rd. Artists are responsible for delivery of their works to the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts on Monday, August 13th ready to install with hanging software attached to the back of all wall pieces.

MELVILLE CONTEMPORARY opens Friday, August 17th as part of both CALL ME MELVILLE and the WORD X WORD FESTIVAL. The opening reception will be 5pm to 7pm and is open to the public. The Brooklyn band CALL ME ISHMAEL will be performing at the opening reception. The show continues through September 29th, 2012.

All submissions must be made electronically & sent to jworthen@uwm.edu. Please include the following information:
1.Up to 5 digital images in JPEG format with image size set to 300 dpi
resolution, 4″ x 6″ image size, approximately.

2. A work list including the name, size, and media of the submitted work, whether it is for sale and at what price, as well as a narrative paragraph describing its connection to Melville’s life and work.

3. Artist resume & link to website, if available.

The Lichtenstein Center for the Arts takes a 20% commission on all sales. Submitted work does not have to be for sale.
