Free Guided Tour Offered
Following a successful kickoff in May 2012, Pittsfield’s First Fridays Artswalk begins its first full year of art shows, openings and events in downtown Pittsfield’s Upstreet Cultural District on Friday, January 4, from 5pm to 8pm.
Galleries, shops and restaurants will be open late and free maps and guides will be available throughout downtown as well as online at firstfridaysartswalk.com. In addition, you can pick up coupons for 10% off that evening’s concert at the Colonial Theatre, featuring the up-and-coming David Wax Museum, who play an exciting musical fusion of traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock.
New to Artswalk or looking for interesting company? Artswalk founder Mary McGinnis will lead a free guided tour of Artswalk locations. Meet her at Gallery 25, located at 25 Union Street just off North Street at 5pm to join in the fun.
Highlights of the January First Fridays Artswalk include: Berkshire Carousel ponies on display at Berkshire Medical Center; an opening reception for a solo show of work by Donna Tukel inspired by Hebrew calligraphy at TREEHOUSE Children’s Boutique; an opening reception for a collection of photographs by designer Paul H. Hergenrother entitled Historic Doors of the Berkshires at The Marketplace Café; the opening of a new show of works by Tom Fahey at Berkshire Community College Intermodal Gallery; and an opening reception for “Under Construction” a group show of works-in-progress by artists at NU Arts Gallery and Studios (formerly known as Art.On.No at 311 North Street.) Crawford Square, home to Pateez Boutique and more, will be featuring a variety of artists in its hallway.
Ongoing shows that will be open Friday night during Artswalk include offbeat iPhone photography by Douglass Truth at The Lantern; small works by Sherry Steiner at Wild Sage; large format photography by David Ricci at Spice Dragon multimedia works by Karen Carmean, Barbara Deely, Cindy Duryea, John Gampert, Mitch Greenwald and Margaret O’Keefe at Bagels, Too; woodwork by Sam Craig at Unusual Wedding Rings & More; Terry Wise at the offices of Downtown Pittsfield, Inc.; and the Out of the Studio group show of resident artists at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, featuring Mario Calouri, Julio Granda, Peg Dotchin, Sean McCusker, Lorraine Abruzzo, Jim Horsford, Michael Rousseau, and Marion Grant.
In addition there is a closing reception for Marge Bride’s solo show of winter scene watercolors at Gallery 25, plus additional prints by Marguerite Bride on display at the Crowne Plaza.
Make an evening of it with dinner out and live music at the Colonial Theatre with the David Wax Museum(tickets $10/$18 without 10% off coupon) or at Mission Bar + Tapas, where the Sister City Jazz Ambassadors will play from 5:30pm-8pm followed by 8 Foot River from 8:30pm-11pm, with no cover charge.
First Fridays Artswalk is the largest year round monthly visual arts event in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.
